8.20.16 | Old Timers Picnic and Back to School Youth Event | Maywood IL

It's not every day you get to be a part of an event that encourages cross generational connections. This is partly due to a commonly held misconception that youth and seniors cannot relate or get along. This of course is not true.  Seniors need the strength and energy of  youth and youth need the wisdom and experience of the elderly. This last weekend I witnessed the power of generations coming together in unity and support.

The event took place Saturday, September 20th 2016. For the very first time since the inception of the annual Maywood "Old Timers" picnic, the youth of the village were invited to participate in the event. The day was kicked off with a youth parade led by Mayor Perkins from 19th street & Maywood Drive to Veterans Memorial Park, where the united picnic was to take place.  In spite of earlier torrential rain and the delay of the starting time, all activities went on as planned. Veterans park was alive with music, food, laughter and with young and old coming together to celebrate Maywood.

At  3 pm, the youth were escorted by Trustee Isiah Brandon to the old Masonic Temple building where volunteers greeted them with backpacks and school supplies.   These back packs were made possible by Maywood volunteers and businesses working together to make sure that kids in Maywood had basic supplies and a back packs for school.  Over 1,000 back packs were given out on that day!

Glen Lerner Gives Back was at the event to lend a hand with set up, grilling, and serving,  A couple of our Glen Lerner Coalition partners also contributed donations of food for the picnic. Special thanks to Advance Physical Medicine & The Onion Roll for providing delicious deli sandwiches and workforce medical who also  donated baked goods for the event.  The Old Timers Picnic committee was moved by our desire to volunteer and were extremely grateful for our contribution.

2016 Back to School Bash & Fair benefiting the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin

There is something to be said about organizations that are willing to put aside their agendas and differences to make a greater impact in their communities. This is exactly what happened on August 13, 2016.  Elgin businesses and non for profits came together to bless The Boys and Girls Club of Elgin as well as local youth with back to school supplies.

The 2016 Back to School Bash and Fair was the brain child of Marco Baez (owner of Stay Sharp Barbershop in Elgin IL) who wanted to use his gifts and resources to help his local community. Hundreds of volunteers participated in this event. Donations from local restaurants and business helped to keep the overhead low. and all cash donations made by the community benefited the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin.

Glen Lerner Injury Attorneys was also there to represent and to be apart of the Army of volunteers that made this event possible. Special Thanks to Marco for your willingness to use your business and your position in the community to make a difference.

Attorney Glen Lerner meets Mayor Edwenna Perkins of Maywood

On August 12, 2016,  Attorney Glen Lerner, Attorney Thomas Grace and Community Outreach Coordinator, Josh Polanco had the privilege of meeting Mayor Edwenna Perkins of Maywood .  Perkins, who has served as Mayor since 2013, became the first African-American female mayor in the history of the Village.

In attendance was also Trustee Isiah Brandon, a devoted public servant who has invested his life to community development and youth outreach. At the early age of 19, Mr. Brandon founded a non for profit called Youth in Motion, an organization committed to leadership development of young people. He was also elected as the youngest trustee ever to take office.

This meeting allowed us to begin a dialogue on practical ways that we as a firm could partner with the village in areas of community development and outreach. We
shared our desire to be part of the everyday life of Maywood. Our purpose for our office, which is located at 701 S. 5th Ave, is to function as a legal resource for the community as well as a base of operations for our charitable initiatives.

It was a privilege to share our vision with these leaders and to listen as they shared their hearts with us. We were deeply moved by their dedication, commitment and sincere love for Maywood.

In response, we have committed ourselves to regular outreach in Maywood and to establishing relationships with like-minded civic, non for profit and businesses who share a common vision to meet needs in the community.

We are excited about the prospects and are honored to be part of this great community.

Together We Will Shine Brighter!
